Mr El-Amir was the first surgeon in Europe to implant the miniature telescope (Centrasight Programme). After qualifying in medicine from the Charing Cross and St Mary’s hospitals, London in 2001, his potential in the field of ophthalmology and retinal disorders was recognised by being mentored under Professor Bird in the Professorial Unit of Moorfields Eye Hospital. He went on to gain a commendation from The Royal College of Ophthalmologists for the Duke-Elder undergraduate prize in ophthalmology. Mr El-Amir was then selected to undertake Moorfield’s specialist surgical training and became Head of House. Mr El-Amir completed his registrar and senior registrar training at the Oxford Deanery School of Ophthalmology where he gained his Advanced Training, approved by The Royal College of Ophthalmologists, in surgical treatment of retinal disorders (vitreo-retinal surgery) as well as the latest techniques in small-incision cataract surgery. Mr El-Amir was appointed in 2010 to run a joint vitreo-retinal service with the teams at the Royal Berkshire Hospital and King Edward VII Hospital, Windsor. With his first year in post Mr El-Amir has been successful in committing to training senior advanced trainees in vitreo-retinal surgery approved by The Royal College of Ophthalmologists with his trainees now in consultant posts across the world from Australia, Slovakia and England. He published this experience in Advances in Ophthalmology in 2012, in a chapter voted the best by the editors. Mr El-Amir continues with a vitreo-retinal surgical, cataract and premium lens surgical practice at the Royal Berkshire and King Edward VII hospitals, in particular specialising in complex conditions requiring dedicated long term care. In addition to his work at the Harley Street Eye Clinic, Mr El-Amir is also the Lead Consultant in charge of paediatric ophthalmic screening for, and the treatment of, retinopathy of prematurity for Windsor.
