Mr Ahmed El-Amir
Mr Ahmed El-Amir is a leading international ophthalmic surgeon. He trained at London’s Moorfields Eye Hospital and at the Oxford Deanery School of Ophthalmology. Mr El-Amir is a member of The Royal College of Ophthalmologists and The American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is chair of clinical governance at the Prince Charles Eye Unit, Windsor.
Mr El-Amir was the first surgeon in Europe to implant the miniature telescope (Centrasight Programme). Within this field, Ahmed El-Amir is the most experienced surgeon in the UK and the only surgeon in the world able to provide this treatment to patients who have had previous eye surgery. He founded the multi-disciplinary Harley Street Eye Clinic in 2014 to provide world-class ophthalmological treatment and patient care. He has a special interest in surgical treatment of retinal disorders, vitreo-retinal surgery, the latest techniques in small-incision cataract surgery and premium lens implant surgery. After qualifying in medicine from the Charing Cross and St Mary’s hospitals, London in 2001, his potential in the field of ophthalmology and retinal disorders was recognised by being mentored under Professor Bird in the Professorial Unit of Moorfields Eye Hospital. He went on to gain a commendation from The Royal College of Ophthalmologists for the Duke-Elder undergraduate prize in ophthalmology. Mr El-Amir was then selected to undertake Moorfield’s specialist surgical training and became Head of House. Mr El-Amir completed his registrar and senior registrar training at the Oxford Deanery School of Ophthalmology where he gained his Advanced Training, approved by The Royal College of Ophthalmologists, in surgical treatment of retinal disorders (vitreo-retinal surgery) as well as the latest techniques in small-incision cataract surgery. Mr El-Amir was appointed in 2010 to run a joint vitreo-retinal service with the teams at the Royal Berkshire Hospital and King Edward VII Hospital, Windsor. With his first year in post Mr El-Amir has been successful in committing to training senior advanced trainees in vitreo-retinal surgery approved by The Royal College of Ophthalmologists with his trainees now in consultant posts across the world from Australia, Slovakia and England. He published this experience in Advances in Ophthalmology in 2012, in a chapter voted the best by the editors. Mr El-Amir continues with a vitreo-retinal surgical, cataract and premium lens surgical practice at the Royal Berkshire and King Edward VII hospitals, in particular specialising in complex conditions requiring dedicated long term care. In addition to his work at the Harley Street Eye Clinic, Mr El-Amir is also the Lead Consultant in charge of paediatric ophthalmic screening for, and the treatment of, retinopathy of prematurity for Windsor. Vitreo-retinal surgery and suture-less vitrectomy (retinal detachment, macular hole, epi-retinal membrane), small-incision, topical anaesthesia, cataract surgery, premium intra-ocular lens implant (multi-focal lens implant, toric lenses, bespoke presbyopia lenses), medical retinal disorders and diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, paediatric ophthalmology, general ophthalmology, glaucoma and Eylea for treatment of patients with wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Research interests
Mr El-Amir has researched a new surgical viewing system for retinal surgery and has worked in the laboratory to identify the safety profiles for surgical dyes in macular hole surgery. Mr El-Amir has collaborated with the University of Oxford to establish the epidemiological data for the whole of England for vitrectomy surgery and retinal detachment in order to understand these conditions better. He continues with this research work.

Personal profile
Ahmed was born in Colorado, USA and raised in London. He is a keen sportsman, playing competitive non-league football with background experience from the Tottenham Football Club Academy and Senior Southern and Conference Football. He was the top goal scorer for his medical school winning the ‘double’ of the Hospitals Cup and University Cup.
