Vitrectomy surgery: saving your sight in a matter of minutes

Vitrectomy treats a number of serious eye problems. If you suffer from a retinal tear or detachment, macular holes or a vitreous haemorrhage then vitrectomy can fix the problem. Similarly, if diabetes has affected your eyesight (known as diabetic retinopathy) then vitrectomy surgery could be for you.

Our expert surgeon carries out the procedure frequently. So although we know any eye surgery is likely to cause you concern, there really is nothing to worry about. The whole procedure takes 30 – 45 minutes (so you can be home the same day).

Straightforward and effective vitrectomy surgery

To begin with, you will be given a local anaesthetic. Followed by drops to relax your eye muscles and open up the pupil. Precision instruments are then used to extract the vitreous gel, the jelly-like substance that fills your eyeball. Once this gel has been removed, a laser will be used to repair any damage to the retina. When the retina has been mended, the gel is then replaced by a clear fluid. You will not feel any discomfort because the area will be anaesthetised fully beforehand.

Supporting you in your recovery

Before you leave, your surgeon will give you clear and precise instructions of how to take care of your eye. You will also be given eye drops and told how often to use them. You might also need to use a special apparatus to ensure the oil or gas is correctly pressing against the detachment – giving your retina the best chance of healing quickly.
